The transition from roll to codex was paralleled by another change in bookmaking techniques, as parchment gradually replaced papyrus as a writing material between the 4th and 8th centuries. The most common procedure for making parchment involved treating animal hides, mainly sheepskin and calfskin. Since parchment was obtained from animal hides, it could be made anywhere, unlike papyrus, which was produced almost exclusively in Egypt. Consequently, its use went hand in hand with the spread of the codex, although this process did not occur simultaneously in the East and West. » Go up |
