25. The Book of Esther Italy, 18th century The parchment roll is attached to a boxwood rod in order to make it easier to read (from right to left). The text, written in Sephardic script, reflects the traditional arrangement in 21-line columns. It contains the Book of Esther, which—along with the Song of Solomon, the Book of Ruth, the Lamentations and Qohelet (Ecclesiastes)—is one of the five scriptural texts (Megillot) traditionally read during certain festivals. On Purim (Feast of Lots), which originated from the story of Esther, this roll is read twice: on the eve of Purim and on the holiday itself. The Library acquired this roll in 1982. |
