On Tuesday, October 6th, at 3:30 p.m., in the D’Elci Tribune of the Medici-Laurentian Library (Piazza San Lorenzo, 9, Florence) the edition of Giovanni Boccaccio’s Teseida, published by Edizione del Galuzzo, will be presented to the public by its editors, Edvige Agostinelli and William Coleman, professors at the City University of New York.
The edition is based on a Laurentian Library manuscript, Aut (Acquisti e Doni 325), composed by Boccaccio circa 1350, but identified as his autograph copy only in the 1920’s. The 9904-line poem is accompanied by more than 1300 previously unknown glosses. The manuscript, however, presented the 20th century editors with several problems: various sorts of blemishes and stains, with resulting retracing by Boccaccio and also by a later hand made the text – and especially the glosses, which were unknown in any other copy – quite difficult to decipher. Thanks to an examination with an infrared and ultraviolet reading apparatus, however, these problems have been faced and resolved in the new edition. The editors have reexamined and studied every intervention in the text and have restored Boccaccio’s original readings. (The textual intrusions are then listed in the notes.) An very important aid is this process has been a 15th century copy of a lost Teseida autograph identifed by the two editors, which has supplied many illegible readings in Aut.
The new edition for the first time includes three types of para-texts that Boccaccio adopted in the autograph: 105 paragraph-signs that point out the octaves which he considered most important, 58 spaces for drawings that he planned for Aut but did not complete, and some 3500 under-dots that identify vowel-elisions necessary for pronouncing the poetry.
Profiting from documents and technologies that were unknown to previous editors, the new version of the Teseida could well become the standard 21st century edition.
Professors Giancarlo Breschi (Accademia della Crusca), Carlo Delcorno (Accademia dei Lincei), Stefano Zamponi (Università di Firenze; president, Ente Nazionale Giovanni Boccaccio) wil present the book. The program will be introduced by Lino Leonardi (Director of the series ) and by Ida Giovanna Rao (Director of the Library). The two editors will also be present.
- Boccaccio’s autograph will be on display in recognition of the occasion.
