VIII. The stage

This section illustrates the fortune enjoyed by Alfieri's theatrical pieces. The academical acting of Antonio Morrocchesi (1768-1838) (cat. n. 207), whose stage figures for Oreste stand out in the D'Elci Rotunda, influences future tragic interpretations thus fixing a canon which was successively followed by great actors such as Clementina Cazzola, Adelaide Ristori, Carlo Quirico, Achille Majeroni jr. The stage is visible also in the numerous illustrations drawn by Guido Gonin for the Sonzogno edition of Alfieri's tragedies (1870).
The 20th century stage is shown by various photographs taken of Alfieri's plays: the Oreste by Luchino Visconti (1949), the Mirra by Orazio Costa (1949), the various Oreste tragedies by Vittorio Gassman, the staging organized by the Centro Alfieriano di Asti in the '50s and '60s. The latter are witnessed not only by photographs but by sketches and models as well belonging to the Eugenio Guglielminetti Foundation Collection (cat. n. 212) in Asti.
